A father had a household of sons who had been perpetually quarreling amongst themselves. When he did not heal their disputes by his exhortations, he decided to present them a sensible illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this objective he at some point informed them to deliver him a bundle of sticks tied with twine, and mentioned to his oldest son: “Break it in pieces.”
